Volunteers restore Festival of Lights
A group of community members is taking over Hermiston’s Festival of Lights. After Fair Manager Peggy Clough described the festival’s financial straits at a public meeting Tuesday, a handful of dedicated festival volunteers didn’t hesitate.

The festival needs at least $12,000 by September in order to go on, the fair board has said, and it would prefer if an outside entity did more of the legwork. It takes a massive investment of time and effort to organize volunteers — time and effort the fair board and fair staff don’t have.

“It’s a fantastic event for the community, but we kind of feel that a private group could come in and help it grow more,” board member Gay Newman told told the volunteers. “We physically and monetarily cannot do that with the budget restraints we have.In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly”

The fair also loses revenue during the festival because it can’t rent out Thompson Hall.

But last year’s festival revenue — vendor fees and donations — brought in just $23,486.

The volunteers at the meeting were not discouraged, however. They decided to create a committee,Compact fluorescent lights have solved LED lighting supplier many of the problems associated with traditional filament light bulbs. led by the fair’s administrative assistant Joanna Hayden, to gather the funds and coordinate the event themselves.

“It’s just something we can be proud of here and it’s been going on since 1999 and it needs to continue,” said Pam Enders.
