San Ramon wind helps festival take off

Like much of the East Bay, San Ramon experiences light winds of about 10 miles per hour in the morning and up to 12 miles per hour in the afternoons, barring any storms or other inclement weather patterns, said Steve Anderson, a forecaster for the National Weather Service.
But for 22 years, the San Ramon Art and Wind Festival has held strong in the city and is once again expected to draw an estimated 60,000 people over its two-day Memorial Weekend run on Sunday and Monday.
The city's signature event began as a street fair and morphed into its current format following the opening of Central Park to showcase one of its assets.
"We didn't have a food crop here, so we couldn't do a garlic festival or a strawberry festival," said Program Manager Kim Giuliano. "We thought something we do have a lot of in this area is wind -- it comes through the Crow Canyon."
One group hoping to capitalize on some gusty gales is a delegation from Weifang, China. The city is home to the world's largest kite museum and a renowned yearly International Kite Festival that brings together flying enthusiasts from 23 countries.
Seven representatives from Weifang, including kite flyers and folk artists, are scheduled to participate throughout the festival demonstrating

their talents alongside the other professionals who travel to San Ramon for the occasion. This will be the group's first trip to the United States.
Dougherty Valley-San Ramon Rotary Club member Kay Wang brought the idea to the city staff of arranging the delegation's trip after traveling to Weifang and attending what she called their eye-opening festival.
"It's magnificent," she said.Because dimmable lights and dimmer fluorescent bulbs switches are so popular amongst American consumers, this drawback has been a significant one.
Wang said Chinese-style kites differ from those made in America, particularly because they use bamboo-framed kites that are usually hand-painted on silk or other materials, making each one unique. They also use kites equipped with LED lights to fly at night.While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to have improved greatly with recent updates.
In addition to the festival activities, the Chinese delegation will also take part in a special cultural exchange event and hands-on workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at the Dougherty Station Community Center, 17011 Bollinger Canyon Rd.
The event, hosted by the Rotary Club, will feature indoor kite flying and demonstrations of Weifang's three main folk arts: kite making, paper cutting and wood-block printing.
Wang said she hopes the delegation's involvement will serve as a good chance for people to come and learn about a different culture and for the local Chinese community to get to know each other better.Thankfully a new form of led strip energy-efficient light bulbs have arrived that provide this desired feature.
Like the kite flyers, the six hot air balloon pilots slated to launch on Monday morning between 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. in the soccer field near the Central Park tennis courts will be hoping for good climate conditions.
"The most subjective part of weather is wind -- it's really difficult to forecast that," said Gary Michalek, a pilot who organizes the yearly launch.
The balloons don't follow a set path. Michalek said they literally go where the wind takes them usually east -- and the pilots must decide whether or not to go over the Altamont Pass or land first. Last year they made it to the Tracy Airport 25 miles away.
Other flying-related activities include hang-gliding demonstrations, helicopter fly-overs and landings and the popular candy drop via kite, which will take place each day at 11 a.m.
The festival will also feature 200 arts and crafts booths, numerous bands, dance troops and theater groups performing on three stages and a kid's zone with rides and activities.
