CNY companies develop a better light bulb
The old incandescent light bulbs are on the way out, and a team of companies are jumping in with a new generation of efficient LED lighting.
The LEDs are about as close to natural light as a bulb can produce. They're also more efficient and less expensive over the life of the bulb. It's a technological leap.
"We talked about this next LED going from like the Commodore 64 to the iPad," said John Johnston of ProTerra LED.
One of the products developed by the team of companies is a model that can replace an existing florescent bulb. It'll last years longer and use 80 percent less energy.
"We're guaranteeing these lights for 5 years," said Ephesus Technology's Joe Casper.
Already,Compact fluorescent lights have solved LED lighting supplier many of the problems associated with traditional filament light bulbs. the new LED lighting is being put to use in a Canadian Factory and the bulbs haven't faded at all.In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly Although the initial cost is higher than standard bulbs, the energy savings and reduced need for replacements will save money over the long haul.
The work is all the result of collaboration between three companies, one from Canada, one from Syracuse. They ran into each other at the Syracuse Technology Garden.
"For us While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to have improved greatly with recent updates.it was just too good to be true and it turned out to be really, really good and really, really true," said Group4 Labs' Felix Ejeckam.
Syracuse will be home base for the effort and handle the research and development of the products. Eventually the manufacturing will also take place here.
"We're going to have to have board manufacturing, we're going to have to have metal extrusions capability,sale of LED for lighting applications. Semileds is led lights only a minor palyer and should currently not be mentioned in the same breath as the other others plastics, so we're going to be creating jobs in other market segments to support our products," said Brian Abbe, Vice President of Ephesus.
The lights will be marketed toward more industrial customers to start, but will make their way into homes within a few years. They're already certified and ready for market.However, the marketing muscle of Philips led light lighting could give Philips LED business an advantage.
They'll next be installed in six miles of New York City subway.
