Burton seeking energy grant to bring LED lighting to governmental buildings
City officials hope a state energy grant will help alleviate large energy bills that have become a burden on the city’s general fund.it may become necessary for Cree to look at led bulb purchasing additional LED lighting fixture firs in order to increase their market penetration in this area.

City Controller Ginger Burke-Miller said the city will go after one of 20 energy efficiency and conservation block grants to be given out in the state. A May 26 deadline looms for the city.

“We have a very short period of time to get this done,” Burke-Miller said. “This is the first time we have applied for this type of thing.”

The money could be applied toward light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting at the city’s facilities, interior and exterior.While many consumers have switched from Led down light traditional filament light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs, Council members learned of the grant money at a recent Michigan Municipal League conference in Lansing.

Council President Steven Heffner brought the idea before the council. Burke-Miller said “this is a very good thing for the city.”

“If we can do something that would save the taxpayers money, we are all for it,While SmartView has been slow DSTT and unstable in the past, it seems to have improved greatly with recent updates.” she said. The city’s 2011-2012 proposed budget has $500,000 set aside for street lighting alone.

While the grant money does not cover street lights, it could be used for parking lot lights,In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly flood lights and interior lights at city hall, police/fire building and the Department of Public Works building.

Burke-Miller looked into the possibility of LED lighting while employed at Green Oak Charter Township.

“There are federal grant monies that have been awarded to consumers and DTE,” she said. “That’s what I was pursuing at Green Oak, and I will continue pursuing this here because it won’t cost anything.”

Burke-Miller noted “there’s a big push from both the state level and federal level for conservation.”

“Eventually the citizens will see a drop in the cost (of lighting), and hopefully we will see some improvement in the general fund,” she said.

Grants are expected to be dispersed to chosen cities between Aug. 1 and June 30, 2012.
