However, those who were clamoring all playoffs for Tyler Seguin to get ice time got their argument some backup when Seguin took a pass into the zone from Michael Ryder and then easily maneuvered by Lightning defenseman Mike Lundin and beat Tampa netminder Dwayne Roloson (31 saves) for the Bruins first goal of the night and the 19-year-old rookie’s first career playoff goal to make it a 3-1 game.
“It was a great pass,” Seguin said, “Obviously, it’s a seven game series, and they got the first one. We’ve got to bounce back on Tuesday and be more prepared.”
Thomas didn’t play a bad game. He stoned Lightning phenom Vincent Lecavalier seven minutes into the game and in the second period robbed Steve Downie with a sprawling glove save that had Downie slam the stick down in frustration. After no penalties in the opening 20 minutes, the teams were a combined 0-for-5 on the power play in the second period.
But Tampa struck on the man-advantage at 13:37 of the third period, when a roughing call on Boychuck – he took a swipe at Lecavalier -- led to a Marc-Andre Bergeron power play goal for the Lighting that sealed the deal, 4-1.
Thomas never saw Bergeron’s blast from the point as old foe Simon Gagne, whom the goaltender had robbed earlier in the period, effectively screened him in front.
Gagne scored an empty netter at 17:29 but the Bruins responded when a Boychuck blast deflected off Bergeron’s skate past Roloson at 18:59, with Seguin getting the assist.
Too little too late, of course.
“I think we could’ve had a better effort,” Julien said. “The effort was something we’re going to need more of.”
