Christmas light displays. What's not to love?

As much as I like all the trappings of Christmas — music, gift giving, cookies, celebrating light-coming-into-darkness — Christmas lights have a special place in my heart.

And by Christmas lights, I mean the lights individuals put up around their houses. Oh, of course I enjoy the professional displays, too. But there's just something particularly magical about individual displays. I even have several neighborhood favorites that I look forward to walking or driving by each year.

After years of dedicated Christmas light observation, I've finally categorized lights as follows:

Over-the-top extravaganza productions. These are light displays that would make the character Clark Griswold from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie weep with envy... light displays that cover entire houses and lawns, displays that come with a front yard sign explaining the radio frequency viewers should tune into to hear the music to which the flashing lights are set, and displays that probably generate electric bills greater than the entire neighborhood's monthly mortgages.

Ahhh, but what about light displays that don't entirely fit in one category or another? Say, all classy white lights on most of the shrubs... except one shrub with traditional multi-colored lights? Or a display with a manger in the front yard, but Santa and his reindeer on the roof?

But the Forchione family continues to illuminate the night sky this year with their Christmas on Crownpoint light show. In its third year, siblings Drew, Laura and Nick Forchione have assembled an orchestra of Christmas lights that is conducted by a computer software program.

They're welcoming anyone to come and watch the 20-minute light show on the two-story home of their parents, Geno and Karen Forchione at 3459 Crownpoint St. NW. All they ask is for a donation of nonperishable canned goods for the Akron Canton Food Bank or for a monetary donation to the Sgt. "We decided this year that instead of just doing a light show where we are collecting donations for the Akron Canton Food Bank, we will also be collecting monetary donations for Dan Patron's Memorial Scholarship Fund at Perry High School."

The 20-minute light show has three parts — a Christmas show, a Disney show and a tribute to the 20-area troops killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The Christmas show features Snowy, an animated character developed by Drew Forchione.China LED Strip catalog and lightsale manufacturer directory.

"There is a huge surprise for everyone to be able to sit in their car, in a warm vehicle and watch the show with their family and friends," Laura Forchione said.

In 2009, Drew Forchione, an aspiring electrical engineer whose dream is to work as an Imangineer for Disney World, and his siblings convinced their parents to put on the light show.

Without a lot of time to plan, they pulled together a smaller show. Last year, more than 12,000 lights are plugged into a special, 48-channel light box that allows the Forchiones to program them through a software known as Light-O-Rama. Observers can use their car radios to listen to the audio portion of the show.

"It took him a lot of time to convince my parents," Laura said, "but he fought for it and the first year we pulled it off. A lot of people loved it.We are professional led panel light,brightcrystall2011 manufacturers and factory in China. We had a steady flow of cars every night.

"We thought if we're getting all of those people ‘Why not do something good for our community?'" she said. "We've been able to work with the Akron Canton Food Bank last year and we're opening it up to donations this year as well.

In 2010, the family collected more than 800 pounds of food and nearly $260 for the Akron Canton Food Bank. They're hoping to double or even triple that this year.

Laura said the previous shows don't compare to what they have in store.

With Christmas lights, more not always better

Outdoor Christmas decorations, along with other aspects of the holiday, seem to show up earlier each year — as do the first ads for seasonal shoppers with those familiar yuletide jingles that become irritating real fast.

It once was the case that people didn't start putting up their lights until after Thanksgiving, but I noticed that some did so a full two weeks before that this year. A lady in my neighborhood literally took down her Halloween decorations and put up ones for Christmas on the same day.

But I'm here to say that earlier does not necessarily translate into better as far as taste, and the same goes for those who try to outdo their neighbors in terms of sheer numbers of lights.

I do not profess to be an expert in decorating, but some of the light schemes to be seen these days are truly beautiful and tasteful while others are downright tacky and tasteless. A few look as though they came from a bad Chinese factory, or were put up by a frustrated theme park worker who's been smoking crack.

The best ones seem to have a central premise, such as a manger scene, for example, with all the key characters arranged in a nice balanced manner and a system of lights that complement the main components. The same can be true of a Santa and sleigh scene, a snowman with carolers or large messages such as "Merry Christmas" or "Peace on Earth."

To me, a truly attractive light display should resemble a portrait on a canvas, with all the pieces working together to create an object of art.

Some of the best lighting schemes I've ever seen on a home exterior usually highlight a single color, such as nice blue or clear lights, and maintain a uniform pattern of decorations along the lines of the house and key features of the lawn. There also might be candles of the same color in all the windows.

The fancier ones I've gazed upon in recent years are computer-controlled, which allows such things as reindeer in the front of a yard being lit in a sequence to make them seem to be moving — then all flashing at once.

In other words, the finer decorations reflect a philosophy of elegant simplicity and don't overwhelm the viewer with a mishmash of color. And the real tools that make them effective are imagination and creativity rather than just throwing together a mass of confusion.

The sheer brightness of some of these exhibitions also is a problem. Frankly, people, you want passersby to enjoy them — not be blinded to the point they run off the roadway. The layout also shouldn't resemble an airport runway to any pilots who happen to be flying overhead (along with Santa).

Although the main motivation behind some of the more-garish arrangements seems to be the big egos of certain homeowners, it ought to be the enrichment of the viewing public.
