Solais socks away $1.75M in Series B round

LED lighting technology company Solais Lighting Inc.Cygo-Lite has rechargeable bcrystall headlights to flashing safety lights. has raised $1.75 million of a planned $2.5 million new funding round, according to federal documents. The Stamford, Conn.-based company also has research operations in Newburyport.

According to the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Solais has five backers in the round, but the filing does not list them by name. On its website, Solais lists as investors FreshTracks Capital LP, Long River Ventures and early stage consulting and investing firm Gorann. In the company's Series A round from December 2009, Solais raised $638,000 of a planned $2.6 million fundraise, according to SEC documents.

Solais CTO Steve Johnson lives in Newburyport and does his research at the Newburyport Cleantech Center. Siting the R&D in Newburyport allows Solais to draw on the North Shore's expertise in lighting and LEDs from companies like Osram Sylvania in Danvers and Philips Color Kinetics in Burlington, Johnson said in an interview in April. Johnson launched the development work of Solais in the Newburyport Cleantech Center in December of last year.

Founded in 2009, Solais produces a spotlight using LED technology that requires roughly one-fourth the energy typically needed. It is targeting commercial and industrial users initially, and lists customers like Timberland and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
