A conversation with: LED maker,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales group growing
Dave Simon is president of both Ilumisys Inc., a Troy-based maker of LED lights, and of the Michigan Solid-State Lighting Association.

The U.S. Department of
Energy estimates the market for indoor lighting alone at $21 billion and predicts that bulbs powered by light-emitting diodes will expand.Compact fluorescent lights have solved LED lighting supplier many of the problems associated with traditional filament light bulbs. Last September, Ilumisys, a subsidiary of Troy-based Altair Engineering Inc., bought a standalone headquarters and manufacturing facility as the company grows.

Simon talked with Crain's reporter Tom Henderson about the company and the trade group. In many ways LED lights compact fluorescent provide the best of both worlds. They are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly (and are, in fact, more environmentally friendly

How's the new building? We've moved in our R&D team. However, the marketing muscle of Philips led light lighting could give Philips LED business an advantage. It's a small staff, eight people, but we're excited to be in the new building. We're getting our capital equipment in place, which is going to make our manufacturing highly automated and cost competitive with China. We're seeing a global shift in manufacturing back to the U.S. Chinese labor rates are going to triple over the next few years. They won't be up to U.S. wages, but it makes it less attractive to shift business overseas. It's a good time to be manufacturing in Michigan.

What sort of volumes to start and what markets? We'll do about 800,000 units a year. We'll be focused on LED replacements for fluorescent tubes. The replacement market for fluorescent tubes in the U.S. alone is 550 million units per year. ... We'll be hiring a few people to work in production, some in material handling, some in logistics, some in sales,It was quick and light when I used dsttマジコン on a Windows 7 laptop, and gave me no trouble throughout a day of rigorous testing. accounting and shipping. We'll have them all hired by late fall, 40 people in all.

What do traditional tubes cost, and what do your tubes cost? Fluorescent tubes are $2 to $3 each. Right now, between us and our licensees, we're seeing retail prices ranging from $40 to $80. We see that being cut in half over the next two years. And when we get to that point, there's a two-year payback for customers because of the energy savings, plus you eliminate all the problems associated with mercury.

How is the association going? We're up to 24 members and growing. We've got a significant recruiting event in the western side of the state we're focusing on for August. We have our annual symposium in November. We've only been around for a year and a half and we've already had two major symposiums. We'll have a booth at a June event at Oakland University, at an event put on by the Department of Energy and the national Municipal Solid-State Street
Lighting Consortium.

  1. I really appreciate you for this fantastic information you have posted here. The LED growing lights are energy efficient source of light, which can easily emit desired intensity of light. In addition, the life span of LEDs is better than the conventional sources of light.
