Grinzinger said Mount Pleasant was the first city in the state of Michigan to do curbside pickup of recycling bins.

The ICTC currently has one hybrid vehicle, but Adams said he does not see the value to change the entire fleet of vehicles. The ICTC is considering changing its diesel-powered fleet to cleaner-burning propane in the future.

Pyle said he doesn't expect demand to increase until supplies of old-fashioned incandescent start dwindling.

"They ban making them, so eventually the supply dries up. Once the supply starts drying up, then they'll panic. And by that point it'll be too late," he said.

Eagle project lights up Sutter's Delta Medical Center's rooftop

The mock letters were ready for a test. However, when they were placed on the roof of Sutter Delta Medical Center, Sebastian Salmeron realized there was a problem.

The letters were too wide and the full "Season's Greetings" sign wouldn't fit.

Normally, when a Boy Scout is working on his Eagle Scout project, he doesn't have to worry about fonts. That wasn't the case for Salmeron, who grew up in Antioch and now lives in Concord. Salmeron decided his project would be creating a new "Season's Greetings" sign for the hospital in Antioch.

"I had a practice piece of plywood," said the 17-year old Salmeron. "And it was 4-by-4. We measured it and there wasn't enough room for all the letters. I had to scale them down. When I changed them I had to change the height too because on the computer when you change the width it changes width and height."

The size of the letters was probably the biggest obstacle in the project for Salmeron. He set up a power-point on a projector and traced each letter on a screen, then cut the individual letters out of plywood.

Salmeron began working on the sign in February and finished up just after Thanksgiving -- just in time for the sign to go up and greet patients and visitors at Sutter Delta, as well as drivers on Lone Tree Way.

The sign is 43 feet across and each section weighs about 70 pounds.

Salmeron put in more than 100 hours on the project and got help from workers at the hospital as well as 16 fellow Boy Scouts. Salmeron will achieve Eagle Scout rank once he finishes two more merit badges.

Changes to light bulb standards now in effect

A new standard for light bulbs that took effect Sunday aims to bring Thomas Edison's 131-year-old creation into the 21st century through increased energy efficiency.

The average lifespan for an incandescent bulb is between 750 and 1,500 hours, while CFLs can last for 8,000 hours and draw less energy when lit.

Nizamuddin has to repay the rest of the cost of the solar home system (SHS) over the next 36 months at five dollars per month, which, he says, is no burden.

Acting managing director of GS, Abser Kamal, told IPS, "SHS units are in demand due to many advantages, but especially because it is far cheaper than conventional fuels like kerosene and diesel and has no maintenance expenses."

"In the villages solar power provides extended working hours for students, shopkeepers and housewives. Now they can do things like conveniently charge mobile phones – which have already been changing lives," Kamal said.

"Without solar power many villagers would probably have had to wait years to get electricity from the national grid," he said. "Solar is transforming their lives – this is quick social and economical development."

Only 41 percent of Bangladesh's 142 million people have access to electricity from the sluggish national grid.

GS, a pioneer in promoting 'green energy', started out in 1996 as a lone player and today is the largest distributor of SHS - over 700,000 units out of a total of about 1.1 million in the country - contributing to the daily generation of about 60 Mw of solar power.

Current power generation from some 81 power plants amounts to 6,700 Mw, with 95 percent of it coming from burning fossil fuels like coal, furnace oil, gas and diesel. Hydroelectric power accounts for another 3.3 percent
