Route 5 Traffic Calming Projected for Summer 2012

Following the reemergence of Route 5 traffic safety projects in 2008 and this semester's plans for traffic calming from North Fields to Historic St. Mary's City, plans are underway to begin main construction projects this summer.

"The goal of traffic calming is to create a safer area for pedestrians and cars to use Route 5,In the past brightcrystal2011, light artists often haven't been taken seriously because the esthetic beauty or perceptual quality of their work didn't fit with conceptual" said Dan Branigan, Director of Design and Construction for the College. "We're planning sidewalks,As such, they perform an ledtube2011 order of magnitude better than any commercially available solar technology and offer a considerably faster return on investment. lighting, curbs, medians, splitting islands, and other things to separate traffic from pedestrians."

The speed limit on the portion of Route 5 that passes near the campus is 30 miles per hour, but is 50 mph near the Green Door and quickly slows to 40 mph near the campus. These conditions, combined with the road's width, lack of traffic-slowing structures, and diminished lighting, make Route 5 a potential hazard for pedestrians and drivers that are near the campus on a daily basis.

The master plan for traffic calming includes projects from the North Fields section of Route 5 and south on 5 until Rosecroft Road near Historic St. Mary's City. A large sidewalk will start just north of College Drive,which allows “unlimited” programming flexibility lightbrigh . More streetlights and sidewalks will be placed farther south, with islands in the road at intersections to College Drive and Historic St. Mary's City to guide turning traffic.

In addition, the intersection to the River Center will be shifted from its current 140-degree angle with Route 5 to 90 degrees, making the turn easier for northbound traffic and slowing southbound traffic turning onto the road. Accompanying the crosswalks (which will be moved closer to intersections to make their use safer and more convenient) will be "bumpouts," extended curbs that narrow Route 5 to slow traffic for pedestrian crossing.

The final phase of the project will be to make an intersection to Route 5 with the Historic St. Mary's City entrance and the Campus Center parking lot entrance, which will be done as the parking lot is being extended for student and Historic St. Mary's City use.

"We're hoping to get construction going this summer," said Branigan, "to time it near Anne Arundel Hall construction."

The projects will be discussed with community members and students during one of the Open Houses in Spring 2012, but the College will meet with the State Highway Administration later this month. Project plans haven't been changed since the recent accident involving a Penn Line truck and student, but are being continued, according to Branigan, to prevent accidents like this from occurring.

"I think, especially for the lower crosswalk, there needs to be more done to illuminate them during the night," said senior Jeff Gibson. "During the day it's fine, less people are in a rush and they are attentive. But at night, you're dealing with exhausted drivers, often speeding to get home."

"I think something needs to be done, but I'm not sure of the best way," said Biology Professor Samantha Elliott. "I don't think there's enough traffic to justify lights, and with extensive road work for islands, I would be concerned about the impact on the river. "I did want the house to serve as a showroom of sort," he says. "Clients, who don't want to have to go to the mall to check out the merchandise, can visit my house here." Such customers include high profile celebrities and those who live in Makati and don't wish to brave the EDSA traffic to visit the showroom at Shangri-La Mall.

His marketing staff and three designers report for work in this residence. He says it's very convenient and because of the sheer size of the house, he says he doesn't feel he's lost any privacy. "We at Living Innovations can build this kind of room in any house," says Ferdie. "We install the equipment, the wiring. It's always best for a client to work with us while he's still doing the plans for the house. But we still can install a mini theater in any existing home."

Despite all the gadgetry and priceless accessories, the Ferdie Ong residence doesn't look ostentatious. Credit his taste for subdued elegance; the house is a showcase but it's also a relaxing home to be in. "Prior to moving into this house, I was one guy who liked to go out and party every night," he says. "And this place is just right between The Fort and Ayala Center. Yet now that I have this house, I never feel like going out anymore. I just want to enjoy it. I'm more of a homebody now. Even my friends aren't interested in partying anywhere else. They just also want to be here."

After Dark

Daylight Saving Time is over (finally!), but it is still getting dark earlier every day for the next month and a half. In ancient times, folks lit candles and fires after dark but retired pretty early to their beds in winter to dream of brighter times.Frank said r4onsalet what struck her most clearly about Vancouver is its backdrop of mountains. In these more modern times, electricity has beaten back the darkness and, in industrially advanced nations, even creates its own form of pollution (but that's another topic).

This luxury comes at a price, of course. Energy is not free, and turning off the computer and the light switch and lowering the thermostat are good for the environment. That being said, the need to provide illumination does exist, not only in homes and offices but outdoors as well. Candles and fireplaces are still some of the most satisfying ways to light up gardens after dark.

Other imperatives exist, however. Welcoming home the family after dark and providing a well-lighted pathway to safely convey guests from the curb to the front door are but two good reasons to light the garden after dark. Lighting outdoor spaces can also enhance the experience of their indoor counterparts. The view from inside to out after dark can provide a warm, shadowy scene instead of a blank, black wall. Outdoor lighting can be dramatic with spotlights drenching architectural trees from below or floodlights bathing a pool in perpetual moonlight. It can also be a subtle glow warming the face of a wall or a delicate shimmer backlighting a lacy shrub.

The good news is that many outdoor lighting options utilize very energy-efficient, low-voltage systems that normally run as low as 12 volts. About a month ago I told you of my quest for the perfect refrigeration setup in my new kitchen, detailing my choice of the Electrolux Icon French Door Refrigerator. I personally love the look of the Professional Series, as it manages to blend a commercial style with a sculpted level of refinement. Each Electrolux Icon piece looks like a solid block of steel, and they're just gorgeous.

From a functional design standpoint, the under-counter refrigerator drawers incorporate what Electrolux calls Smooth-Glide drawers, and if you haven't already guessed, it makes opening and closing the drawers exceptionally easy – so easy you can do with a single finger. IKEA Plugs-in 4 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Carson, CA

IKEA, the world's leading home furnishings retailer, today officially plugged-in four Blink Pedestal electric vehicle charging stations at its Carson, California store as part of its partnership with ECOtality, Inc., a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies. This initiative represents the second such project for IKEA in the United States. My sister is not Death's Grim Reaper

She's a hospice nurse. When I tell people her occupation, I typically receive a response like this: "She must be a very special person. I could never work in a place where people go to die." Hospice is a "place," and equating hospice to death, are just two of the misperceptions that hospice care providers and proponents are constantly working to dispel. Providing correct information that hospice is a philosophy of care (not a place) takes on special importance in November because it is National Hospice and Palliative Care month.

Data from 2010 indicates that more than 68% of hospice patients reside (and eventually die) in the place they call home. This includes 40% of patients living in private residences, 9% in assisted-living facilities and 19% in long-term nursing homes.

These figures are consistent with hospice's delivery of care model that aims to create an environment for an end-of-life experience that is most natural and comfortable for patients and their families. A hospital's linoleum floors, fluorescent lights, intercom noise and equipment alarms are anything but natural or comforting. It makes sense that most people who are approaching the end of their lives would like to be in their own bed or recliner chair.In fact, some studies suggest that more than 80% of Americans want to pass away peacefully at home.

In the hospice model of care, the patient needs a primary caregiver who is willing to oversee the patient's needs. Over time, the caregiver's responsibilities may increase as the patient becomes less able to care for herself/himself. The primary caregiver is typically a spouse, child, sibling or close friend, but she or he could also be someone paid by the patient or family to serve that role. Because hospice's healthcare providers do not provide round-the-clock in-home care, the primary caregiver plays an essential role in hospice care.

The hospice model of care places the patient and primary caregiver in the center ---at the core of the care team--- as they are the key decision-makers. This makes hospice's model of care quite different from traditional medical care. An interdisciplinary team including the nurse, social worker, hospice aide, spiritual care practitioners, a physician or nurse practitioner and volunteers provide special services and guidance to the patient and primary caregiver.

In essence, they surround the patient and caregiver with support and expertise. At my request, my sister thought about and asked her hospice colleagues about other misperceptions about hospice care. A few key themes emerged. First, that hospice care accelerates a person's death. Some people erroneously believe that once an individual signs onto hospice, the care they receive is designed to assist in hastening death and the patient will succumb to their illness sooner than if they were receiving standard care. The evidence shows the opposite.

New engine, new trims for Audi's baby A1

Audi has expanded the choice in its A1 small car range, with a more powerful diesel engine and two new trim levels.

Black Edition and Contrast Edition specifications are now offered alongside the existing Sport and S line trims.

The 2-litre TDI diesel is the fifth engine option in the A1 range. It offers 141bhp, along with 236lbft of torque, this available between 1750 and 2500rpm. According to Audi when combined with the six-speed manual transmission this engine will take the A1 through 62mph in 8.2 seconds and onto 135mph.

The new unit also scores on economy and emissions, figures of 68.9mpg and 108g/km producing 20 VED band B tax levels. Mahindra says that the XUV500 is powered by a 2.2 liter diesel engine which is generating a total output of 140 horsepower and has a peak torque of 130 Nm, mated to a six-speed manual transmission and having an average fuel consumption of 6.6 liters / 100 km.

The Mahindra XUV500 will be offered with some interesting standard features, like six airbags, ESP, automatic climate control, LED lights and a touchscreen infotainment system, for a starting price of 15.500 EUR.

Customers who will want more out of the Indian SUV will be able to order all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, alloy wheels, parking sensors and a third seat row, along many other features, with the top-of-the-line version reaching the equivalent of 19.000 EUR,Crystal first besttube introduced submersible LED lights for water features just over five years ago, and has since then worked to make the product increasingly being an interesting choice to its "European" rivals.

The Indians at Mahindra have made a huge progress in terms of design and performance so future customers of a C segment SUV will have another choice starting from early next year in the form of the XUV500.
